Shirt.Woot turns 2

by Stephen on July 14, 2009

I got this press release from Woot and I was a sort of shocked to see that it has only been 2 years since the start of shirt.woot. It seems like they have been around forever and personally, when I think of t-shirts online, they are one of the sites that automatically pops into my mind. They’ve baked up something good to celebrate the first 2 years and kick off the start of hopefully many more.

From shirt.woot:

SHIRT.WOOT GETS AN APE LAD FOR ITS BIRTHDAY!
Koford, Frauenfelder, Stevens, Ansara Drop By For Cake

ST. LOUIS, Missouri – July 13, 2009 - Shirt.Woot, the online store that sells a new, exclusive t-shirt every day, has invited cartoonist/instigator Adam “Ape Lad” Koford to curate a week of t-shirt sales to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the site’s launch. For reasons known only to himself, Koford has accepted. Each shirt from July 20 through 23 will be designed by him or one of his Internet-famous buds.

The creator of the Laugh-Out-Loud Cats and the brains behind unwieldy mob-cartooning projects like u and Conan vs. Bear, Koford has recruited a Murderer’s Row of design and illustration all-stars to design shirts for this event. Along with Koford, that week’s featured designers include Mark Frauenfelder, founder of Boingboing.net and editor-in-chief of MAKE Magazine; R. Stevens, creator of the hugely popular and influential webcomic Diesel Sweeties; and Mitch “Spacesick” Ansara, the Ohio designer/cartoonist/illustrator known for his imaginary book covers and his newly invented Nintendo-style video game.

“Not only are these guys interesting and talented,” said Shirt.Woot director Joel Lewis, “but they apparently don’t realize what being associated with Shirt.Woot will do to their reputations. Suckers.”

Along with those daily designs, Koford will also co-moderate that week’s Shirt.Woot Derby. This competition features designs created and voted on by the site’s members, with Shirt.Woot producing and selling the three most popular designs each week. Koford will select his personal Honorable Mentions from the remaining entries, making them that much more Honorable.

In Shirt.Woot’s usual fashion, one of the guest designs will be featured on the site’s front page at midnight Central time each day from Monday, July 20 through Thursday, July 23. And like it or not, each will be accompanied by irreverent commentary and critiques in the site’s opinionated, vociferous community forums. Somehow, it’s a model that works for the company, consumers, and designers alike: in the two years since its official launch on July 20, 2007, Shirt.Woot has paid artists over $1 million in earnings from t-shirt sales. Holy cow, a million bucks? What are we, made of money?
