Breaking: acquires Woot! in the mother-of-all WootOffs!

Mega-Super-Online-Retailer, has acquired deal site You should be familiar with woot since their site, shirt.woot is included in practically all daily shirt roundup sites (This site included). Does that mean they are now going to be a soulless corporate entity?

Amazon has been doing subsidiary acquisitions for a while. Companies like Zappos,, and now Woot!, have been brought under the Amazon umbrella, but allowed to maintain most of the same culture and operations that they had before the acquisition. Of course, they are still accountable to the corporate overlords, but on the plus side, they gain access to a collective resources and money saving overhead services.

Here is a sock puppet monkey explaining the deal:

I think that the site will no longer be a daily deal site, since many have found that particular model to not be profitable enough. I don’t necessarily think that would be a bad thing, but it will cause the site to lose quirkiness that many have learned to appreciate. More might be better, but we will just have to wait and see.

Terms of the deal are undisclosed, but TechCrunch is reporting it to be worth $110 million in cash. Visit the Woot! blog to read more.

A cuddly monkey doing comedy rap is worlds away from boardroom and profits, and in our humble opinion daily sites are unsustainable. Will be interesting to see what becomes of WOOT! Only bigger better things we hope, onwards and upwards! I think the monkey won me over.
